The 5th National Literary Award For Young Writers
National Literary Award For Young Writers is a literary contest for Czech young writers in English, which has been taking place in the Czech Republic since 2007 (as The IMPAC Czech Young Writers Award) The competition is co-organised by PORG – gymnázium a základní škola, The Charnwood Company and Lidové noviny.
Categories:
- A – up to 12 years of age
- B – 13-15 years of age
- C – 16-17 years of age
- D – 18-19 years of age
(The contest is open only to non-native speakers of English who hold Czech citizenship)
The contestants will submit a short story in English of a maximum length of 1500 words, related to the topic “WE ARE MADE UP OF STORIES“.
The submissions will only be accepted at the e-mail address award@porg.cz
The last day of entries is April 30th 2011.
- Entries must be submitted as an email attachment (in the format of Word or PDF)
with the name of the contestant in the heading.
- In your email message, state your first name and surname, date of birth, address, telephone number, e-mail address and short-story title.
The entries will be judged by a jury whose chairman is Martin Hilský, professor of English Literature and one of the most prominent translators of Shakespeare´s plays and poems into Czech.
Notice of winners (including the short story of an absolute winner) will be published in Lidové noviny and on this webpage (www.porg.cz).
The awards ceremony will take place on June 10th, 2011 at Anděl Media Center in Prague.
The winners of the individual categories will be awarded 10 000 CZK. In addition, the absolute winner will be invited – together with one member of his/her family – to a three-day trip to Edinburgh.

PORG – gymnázium a základní škola consists of primary and secondary schools in Prague-Libeň, Krč and from 2011 also in Ostrava. Since the school was founded in the spring of 1990, it is the oldest non-state educational institution in the Czech Republic. In several surveys PORG was rated first among Czech schools.
