What we do differently

The bilingual eight-year PORG Ostrava gymnasium is a non-profit grammar school located in Ostrava in Vítkovice. This eight-year grammar school had its grand opening in September 2011. In spite of its short history, the school's students have achieved excellent results with regards to SCIO benchmarks.

Its prestige and high level of education is ensured by individualization and efforts to work with students in smaller groups. This approach allows students to discover their strengths and work on them in such a way that each student gets the maximum education at PORG grammar school. An education at PORG is not just about learning a lot of information. Students are encouraged to formulate and express their own opinions, which they discuss with their teachers.

  • The 8-year PORG Ostrava grammar school combines the requirements of the Czech curriculum for grammar schools with international programmes according to "Cambridge International Examinations". Subjects are taught both in Czech and by native speakers in English.
  • This unique system of study gives students the opportunity to choose to study abroad or in the Czech Republic until they finish school.
  • The eight-year PORG Ostrava grammar school is an applicant for the status of candidate IB school. By doing this, it will expand the content of the offered services for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, which students will complete in their last two years of study.
  • At PORG Ostrava grammar school students have the opportunity to learn three world languages (in addition to English, you can choose two more from German, French, and Spanish).
  • Grammar school students have the opportunity to take part in foreign exchange stays, and they can also spend part of their studies on a long-term stay abroad at a partner school.
  • PORG is certified by the American College Board and can provide Advanced Placement, PSAT/ NMSQT, PSAT 10, and PSAT 8/9 exams for both our own students and external students. We offer our own students exams that are necessary to enter British universities.
  • Among the goals of students at PORG Ostrava is to regularly sit for standardized Cambridge English-language exams based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). By the end of their studies, most of our students have attained a C1 level (very advanced), and many even attain C2 (like a native speaker).
  • PORG Ostrava grammar school also provides individualized counselling for admission procedures to foreign universities; our students are regularly successful at top schools in the UK and the United States.
  • Another strong feature of the PORG grammar school is the high level of communication we have with parents. The school uses a parental portal. Students are not only evaluated for their knowledge, but also for their approach. In addition, they get a verbal assessment.

We measure English at PORG using standards of the Cambridge exams (KET to CPE) and then classify students according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR, Level A1 to C2). The following figure maps the level of English for students across school years.

Tuition and scholarships

The annual tuition fee for PORG Ostrava grammar school is:

  • CZK 96,687

Tuition includes all teaching aids, textbooks, and recreational activities.

The primary interest of the PORG public service company to provide the opportunity for gifted pupils to study regardless of their parents’ financial situation. The school has created a scholarship fund that grants scholarships for talented students from families whose financial situation does not allow them to pay full tuition fees. The Martin and Lenka Roman Foundation is one of the contributors to this fund. The scholarship is allocated on the basis of an individual assessment of the application; the study fund takes into account the family's income and financial standing. The scholarship is anonymous and discreet. For the future school year, the annual income of the family is set at CZK 1,000,000, namely the sum of the tax base of both parents, respectively, employed persons living with a child in a common household. Should more than one child from a family attend PORG, the scholarship may be awarded at even higher joint income earnings. The scholarship fund grants scholarships of up to 90% of tuition fees. If your financial situation gets worse during your studies, your scholarship may be granted from the date of such change. Continuing your studies in this case will not depend on your current financial situation. The scholarship can be applied for directly through the application form.

In proceedings for a scholarship, PORG will require, among other things:

  • a filled out application for the scholarship
  • if the parents are divorced, a copy of the court's decision on the property settlement of the spouses
  • a copy of the tax return of both parents or other gainfully employed persons living with the child in a common household

The study fund may request further documentation and information it considers necessary for its decision.
