International School Student Council First Meeting

PORG International School Student Council held their first meeting today with a flood of ideas from each class.

The Student Council was created to give our children a voice in the organisation and running of school activities. Class councillors are elected by their peers and hold office for one month. As the year progresses, the councillors‘ experiences will help develop their self-confidence through public speaking and making reasoned arguments. They will also have the opportunity to see how a democracy can serve its citizens rather than its leaders!

During the week, individual classes have been giving their councillors input on the agenda topics of current class activities, suggestions on improving school activities and suggestions for a monthly fun event.

The first meeting was scheduled to last 25 minutes but as the clock ticked by, it became evident that our pupils have so many ideas and their councillors are representing them so well that we needed a lot more time!

Finally, the doors opened and we had our first report of items for further action:

  • Spending the long break outside (weather permitting).
  • Year 3 would like to present a show about Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Suggestions for our first monthly fun events include ‚a crazy/arty sock day‘ and a ‚bring your scooter day‘.

It is now up to us teachers to either help the children make these events happen or provide a well-reasoned argument for why not.

Let leadership of the pupils, by the pupils and for the pupils not vanish fom this school!
