Exploring History First-Hand: Czech RAF Aircrew In WWII

Our pupils were recently treated to a remarkable and immersive history experience, thanks to a special visit from Daniel Švec, PhD.

Dr. Švec, an expert on Czech pilots who served in the British Royal Air Force during the Second World War, brought history vividly to life through an engaging presentation and an extensive exhibition of wartime memorabilia.

During the session, Dr. Švec, who is a civilian pilot himself,  explained how RAF aircraft of the 1940s operated and what daily life was like for the brave crews who flew and maintained them. With his impressive collection of authentic equipment, uniforms, photographs, and personal items, he offered pupils a rare glimpse into the realities faced by airmen during the war.

One of the highlights of the visit was the hands-on exploration of both original artefacts and carefully made replicas. Children had the opportunity to examine everything from aircrew badges and clothing to bomb shrapnel and bullets recovered from wartime sites. Dr. Švec also demonstrated the ingenious escape equipment used by aircrew, including silk maps of Europe, magnetised needles that could be fashioned into emergency compasses, and false identity documents designed to help downed pilots evade capture.

Posters, booklets, and instructional materials from the era added further insight into the challenges faced by RAF personnel flying missions over occupied Europe.

This special visit built beautifully on our pupils’ previous encounters with military history. Following the excitement of meeting the Red Arrows last September and our annual Remembrance Day commemorations, handling artefacts from the wartime RAF helped children form a meaningful connection between past and present. The session not only deepened their historical understanding but also fostered respect for the courage and resilience of those who served.

We extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Švec for sharing his expertise, enthusiasm, and extraordinary collection with our school community. It was an experience our pupils will not soon forget.
