Ostrava Zoo Visit Brings Nature and Learning to Life

On Wednesday 7 October, pupils from Years 1 to 6 enjoyed an educational visit to Ostrava Zoo. The trip gave children of all ages an opportunity to learn beyond the classroom while observing World Animal Day and exploring the natural world together.

Throughout the day, pupils visited the zoo’s aviaries, animal houses and outdoor enclosures. Seeing such a wide variety of animals at close range encouraged them to be curious, observant and thoughtful about the needs of different species.

The visit also supported pupils’ understanding of the environmental challenges facing wildlife. Children considered some of the causes of animal habitat loss, as well as the wider costs for animals and the ecosystems on which they depend. These experiences helped pupils connect global environmental issues with the animals they could see around them.

Learning continued along the Forest Path in the Botanic Park, where pupils looked for signs of autumn and considered how the natural environment changes with the seasons. This practical experience helped bring their classroom learning to life and strengthened their understanding of seasonal change.

There were plenty of memorable moments throughout the visit. The playful baby pigs proved especially popular, while several curious peacocks showed great interest in the children’s snacks. Feeding the goats was another highlight, giving pupils an enjoyable opportunity to interact with the animals responsibly. After lunch, the children also had time to visit the playground.

The day supported important aspects of pupils’ personal and social development. Children practised behaving responsibly in a public place and representing their school positively. Older pupils helped younger children throughout the visit, demonstrating kindness, patience and growing leadership skills.

Pupils also developed their financial awareness by managing their pocket money during the day. As part of their PSHE learning, they had to think carefully about budgeting, making choices and taking responsibility for their spending.

The visit to Ostrava Zoo was much more than an enjoyable day out. It helped pupils develop a deeper understanding of animals, habitats and the changing seasons while strengthening independence, cooperation and responsible decision-making. Most importantly, it gave pupils from across the school an opportunity to learn together and support one another.
