One of our teachers was recently invited to see the first two students of PORG Ostrava grammar school receive their Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award at a ceremony in Ostrava.
The International Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a challenge aimed at young people who want to get the most out of their lives. It aims to support the personal development of young people by encouraging them to challenge themselves, build life skills and take responsibility for their own growth. Through a balanced programme of physical activity, skills development, community service and adventurous journeys, the Award helps participants develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and leadership. Its objective is to inspire young people of all backgrounds to realise their potential, make a positive contribution to their communities, and prepare for education, work and life as active, engaged citizens.
For a while now, Mr. Jeff has been teaching navigation, campcraft and basic survival skills to participants preparing to undertake their Adventurous Journey. During this challenge, participants must plan and follow a route, carrying everything with them that they need – food, shelter, emergency equipment, etc – dealing with any unforeseen situations which might arise and keeping themselves safe and healthy while they carry out a research project in the field.
We would like to congratulate the first two students to complete all of their first award and wish them well in everything they do in the future. There are many more PORG Ostrava students taking part in the Award and we look forward to seeing their success too.
