It is a well-known fact that debate tournaments, much like family vacations, are full of baffling twists, improbable events, and heated arguments that might or might not involve the fate of humanity. Fortunately for us, accompanied by their debate teacher Mr. Minton, our school’s two debate teams ventured forth to the tournament held at Biskupské gymnázium Bohuslava Balbína in Hradec Králové, prepared for just such an occasion. The event was organized by the venerable Asociace Debatních Klubů, who presented the teams with two fiendishly philosophical motions to battle over from Friday, 18 October to Sunday, 20 October.
The first motion, “All academic output should be freely available,” raised eyebrows among academia. The second, “Former colonial powers should return objects of cultural or historical significance to their places of origin,” was drenched in historical guilt and defensiveness.
Our intrepid debate teams—composed of Naomi Lehner, Stefanie Fabianová, Eliška Brodová, Martin Macek, Zackary Minton, and Ondřej Vortel—debated these motions from both sides, all while not panicking, which is a triumph in itself. Despite being among the youngest there, each team secured a victory in one of five debates—a respectable result in the strange world of debate tournaments.
But more important than wins is that these students mastered the art of argument. We’re proud of their dedication and look forward to their next debate adventure. (M. Minton)
