On Monday, March 30, three teams from our school travelled to Gymnázium Hello in Ostrava to compete in the regional round of the junior debate league Debatiáda, held in Czech. Representing Sekunda in Category I were two teams: Smarties (Robin Durďák and Sophie Metcalfe) and Purple Stars (Eleonora Pokorná and Nela Krčmářová). In Category II, the team Nevím (Ellen Chlebovská and Marek Houldsworth) represented Tercie. The tournament brought together the strongest young debaters from across the region to tackle a range of socially relevant motions.
The debates covered topics such as whether society’s approach to fashion should change and whether the Czech Republic should do more to support people experiencing homelessness. In Category II, students also debated the future of funding for Czech Television. Both Sekunda teams delivered outstanding performances, finishing in 2nd and 3rd. Their success secures them a place in the national round in Prague this May, where they will compete against the top teams from across the country.
