This last summer, I had the pleasure of joining the “5 Steps to Improve Teaching and Learning” course in Lisbon and spent a week really rethinking how learning works in the classroom. We explored very practical strategies around feedback, formative assessment, metacognition, active learning, and student-centered methods, always with an eye on what will actually work with our own students.
During the course, I tried out concrete classroom activities, planned how to scaffold bigger assessments, and design tasks that help students take more ownership of their learning (for example through self-regulated learning routines, voice and choice, and collaborative work).
I left with ready-to-use mini activities, ideas for differentiated-choice assessments, and a clear development plan for improving a specific aspect of teaching.
Back at school, I can already report more engaged classes, smoother lessons with fewer behavioral issues, and a stronger sense of cohesion in the room. The course also encourages teachers to become drivers of change: I try to use what I have learned to share ideas with colleagues, contribute thoughtfully in meetings with leadership, and hope to lead workshops on some of these topics.
